Howard Retiring as Memphis Water Superintendent

The search for a new superintendent for the city of Memphis water and sewer department will begin immediately following the announcement of Dennis Howard's pending retirement. Howard submitted a letter of resignation to the city council that was read at the September 15th meeting. He announced his retirement, effective October 1st.

Dennis has been a great asset to the city of Memphis in his role as supervisor," said Mayor William Reckenberg. "He has mentored his crew in every aspect of their jobs. He will be greatly missed. I wish him a happy retirement."

Howard has held the position since January of 2002, when he was appointed to replace superintendent Bob Ellicott, who retired.

The superintendent position oversees the city's water treatment facility and the city lagoon and is responsible for the water distribution lines as well as the city's sanitary sewer system. The distribution system has two full-time employees, while the water treatment facility is manned 24/7.

As the department head for nearly a decade, Howard has been responsible for maintaining water quality for more than 1,000 municipal service recipients and charged with meeting ever changing regulations from the Department of Natural resources and the Environmental Protection Agency related to the city's waste water lagoon and sewer system. He also oversaw the implementation of the new Memphis city swimming pool.

The council voted 4-0 to accept Howard's resignation with regrets and wished him the best in his future endeavors. The search will begin immediately for his replacement, a search that could include internal candidates if qualified.
