Camping Opportunities Expanded at Lake Show Me

Campers seeking to stay at Lake Show Me near Memphis saw their opportunities expand in 2011. Three additional sites were added to the facilities, expanding the capacity to 13 campgrounds.

"We've seen some real good improvements to the facilities," said Memphis Mayor William Reckenberg, a regular at the campgrounds. "Rates for the sites went up this year, but the added revenue is making improvements like this possible."

Daily camping rates were raised from $10 to $15 in 2011. The fees are collected daily by the Memphis Police Department. Campers are required to have a occupancy sticker with payment in place for pickup within an hour of arrival at the grounds.

The large campground, located near the shooting range at the southeast corner of the lake, will now hold up to nine campers, with seven regular sites and two pull-ins. A new rock pad was constructed to allow campers to take advantage of available electric services that previously had been accessible to just one site.

"Previously there had been two electric hookups available but just the one pad," Reckenberg stated. "Now we can fit another camper in there with full hookups."

At the north campground, two new cement pads were poured to expand the campground's capacity. The sites feature 50 and 30 amp electrical service.

They are located near the drive-thru dump station, that was added to the campgrounds three or four years ago. The sites have been expanded near the walking and horse trails on the grounds that previously had housed the old hay barn. The deteriorating building was removed earlier this year. A shelter house, previously located near the old fish cleaning station at the northeast corner of the lake, was moved to the new camping area to further upgrade the facilities.
