School Supplies Delivered to Thomazeau Orphanage

Joni Kraus and Kim Clark delivered school supplies to children at the Thomazeau Orphanage in Haiti.

On their life-changing mission trip with "Gods Chosen Ones Ministry," Joni Kraus and Kim Clark, made their destination to Thomazeau Orphanage, in the mountains of Haiti, with over 250 pounds of donations consisting of school, dental, clothes, and hygiene supplies. Donations were welcomed from local churches, businesses and individuals; some from as far as Fredrick OK.

While at Haiti they were part of a team of 23 people, including doctors, nurses, dentists, and college students, each bringing their own special talents to serve at Haiti. Joni and Kim were a part of four medical clinics, food distributions, orphanage visits, and Vacation Bible School.

First, they set up a medical clinic in a Tent City where around 250 people were able to see a doctor and a dentist, then a pharmacy was set-up to dispense medicine. Many people seen at the clinic were experiencing malnutrition and dehydration. There many teeth were extracted and even sutures preformed along with many other cases. Each person that went through the line was given hygiene items to take with them.

Next, they went to a remote site in the mountains where they set-up a medical clinic in the village of Ganthier. Over 250 people went through the clinic. And at the end of the line they were given a peanut butter sandwich, juice, and a bag of various hygiene items.

The group went to Thomazeau Orphanage two times and did two medical clinics, one with the children at the orphanage and one with the villagers. On one of the visits they set up a Vacation Bible School. It started with a praise and worship service sang in Creole with the children, and then they made and decorated picture frames. Joni took pictures of all the children and Kim recorded information about each child. They each received a book bag, clothes, shoes, hats, and various items. The welcome arrival of school supplies for the children was greatly appreciated and will be handed out on the first day of school. The children and adults enjoyed playing a game of soccer. And a plate of spaghetti was provided by "God's Chosen Ones Ministry," to each child for dinner. Each family from the village was given sugar, rice, spaghetti, canned fish, and hygiene products.

Joni and Kim brought out pattern blocks, flash cards, markers, and paper from the supplies and spent time with the children. They loved the attention. The children were able to read some English. Joni and Kim became very attached to the children and spent as much time with them as they could. It would have been good to know the language and to communicate with the children better, but hugging them, and showing them love is something they understood and needed.

There were hot days with large crowds of people who rarely got to see a dentist or doctor. At each site there was always jobs to do, crowd control, escorting people from station to station, preparing and handing items out, and playing with children. Yet, one of the more important task was done by Mikey, 23 years old, who prayed with each person as they left the clinic.

Joni and Kim have decided that a week was not long enough to do all the work that they felt they were called to do. Another journey is definitely in the future for both of them and they want to go back and serve God in the way He has planned for them.

They want to thank everyone for being a part of this great experience and part of the team with donations, financial support, and prayers; that took them to Haiti and brought them back safely. A presentation will be given at the Christian Church in Gorin Missouri, Sunday August 28th at 10:30 am and at a later date at St. Paul UCC Church at Kahoka.

There are on-going needs at Thomazeau Orphanage, if you would like to stay involved in this mission project financially, or sponsor a child, please contact Joni Kraus or Kim Clark.
