4-H Royalty Crowned at 2011 Scotland County Fair

The 4-H members representing their clubs for the 4-H Royalty Contest came to the courthouse May 1 where the judges read their stories, interviewed them and judged their demonstrations.

The princess is 11 years old and in her second year of 4-H. She joined 4-H because she wants to be a part of a group, learn how to speak in the public and she loves arts and crafts and animals. She lives in Memphis and has two siblings, an older brother and a younger sister. She belongs to the Missouri Mischeifs 4-H club and says being in the club feels like family because they care about each other. She likes to decorate the tree in the courthouse lawn for Christmas, doing birthday parties for residents of the nursing home and selling things to earn money for her club and the 4-H council.

The 2011 4-H princess is Emily Hilpert daughter of Aimee Offutt and Gene Hilpert.

The 2011 prince is in the third grade at Scotland County R-I. He wanted to become a member of 4-H so he could learn about projects. Both his mother and father were members of 4-H. His 4-H projects are currently scrapbooking, gardening and swine. He has been keeping a 4-H scrapbook since he was a clover kid, and will have a record of his projects when he is older. Gardening is one of his favorite projects because he wants to be a farmer one day and planting a garden is like a small farm. In his swine project he had to learn to clean their pen and make sure they had feed and water and brush their hair. He also likes to do demonstrations and judging at the 4-H Achievement Event. Brock Aylward is the 9-year-old son of Doug and Christy Aylward of Memphis.

The 4-H Queen has two siblings. She joined 4-H in 2008 because she found that it helps in the community and will help her become a better leader and person. She has taken dogs and photography. Photography is her favorite project. She wants to be able to take pictures of flower petals falling in front of the photo. She hasn't learned yet but expects to next year. She has learned that if you lay on the ground it makes things look bigger and if you look down things look smaller. Her grandmother taught her how to make pictures soft focus. Her major accomplishment is that she knows how to use her camera including zooming in and out, making the object more clear or fuzzy, and making the subject taller or shorter. The 2011 Queen is Kaitlyn Whitaker, thirteen year old daughter of Vanessa and Mathew Whitaker.

The 4-H King is a chicken man. He likes chickens and he has lots of bad luck with them. Last year right after the fair a hawk or something got all of his chickens. They were just gone. He bought some more and put wire over the top of the pen and something dug under the pen and killed all of his chickens. He is working on his second bunch of chickens this year. Along with poultry he is taking swine, beef and wood working. He has held the offices of song & game leader, secretary and vice president of his club. As a 4-H member he feels he has developed many character strengths. He thinks about what he has learned in 4-H and then applies it to real life situations. He feels he has learned to be open- minded and fair. He tries to think about how his activities will affect others. His club is very active in community service and they also do fun things. The 2011 King is Keenan Bradley, 13-year-old son of Tonya Bradley.
