Red Rooster Trading Company Helping With the Daily Grind

by Hannah Kiddoo

For most, "the daily grind" isn't a pleasant concept, but the phrase takes on a whole new meaning when Bible Grove residents Justin and Britta Burrus go to work. In 2010, the couple began making manual coffee and pepper grinders and have since sold their products in stores from New York to Oregon.

Their business originally began in Camano Island, Washington with Nate Laun. After searching for a way to make the most flavorful, fresh coffee, Laun combined a conical burr grinder and Ball glass jar to create the first "Camano Coffee Mill" and later developed the "Mabana Pepper Mill".

Laun eventually passed on the company to the Burrus family. They launched under the name Red Rooster Trading Company and have since added their own twist to the machines by using local wood for a unique design aesthetic and creating new products such as the "Crush Grinder".

"Justin hand selects the hardwood lumber, he cuts out and builds the wood base, hand sands and finishes each lid with a food-grade finish. Then he assembles the product, packages & ships," shared Britta Burrus on her husband's handiwork.

She explained that the best thing about the grinders is the taste they produce. Coffee made from a manual grinder is special because the beans are crushed, not cut, allowing for optimal flavor. Since it is a hand grinder, the mechanics do not build up heat like an electric grinder does, keeping the beans from burning and avoiding coffee with a bitter flavor.

Sales can be credited to the products being both fun and functional. With each crank, coffee or pepper grains fall and collect in the glass jar, and seeing that process is enjoyable for customers who value freshness. In addition, because of their pleasing design, products look great left out on display in kitchens and each purchase is wrapped and shipped in crafty packaging designed to compliment the hand-crafted feel of the products.

Red Rooster's diligence when designing has led to satisfied customers from around the country and increased growth in business despite recent economic downturns. Each grinder is made with care and as a result, Red Rooster has even had challenges keeping products in stock.

"Every day we give our business to God and trust Him to give us wisdom and direction. It is exciting to see where He is taking us," shared Britta Burrus.

Depending on type, Red Rooster Trading Company grinders cost between $59.99 and $74.99. Discount bundle packages can also be ordered and include a couple of accessories for maintaining the products. While orders can be placed online, local shoppers can pick up grinders at Oakwood Industries in Memphis, Mo. For more information visit www.redroostertradingcompany.com.
