BYU's Vocal Point A Cappella Group to Perform in Memphis

The stage at the Memphis Theatre will be the focal point on June 30th when a group from Brigham Young University will put their voices on display for area music enthusiasts. Vocal Point, a renowned nine-man a cappella group will perform Thursday night, beginning at 7 p.m.

Vocal Point combines harmony, humor and remarkable vocal percussion to entertain crowds across the United States. The college students are selected based on their music ability, stage presence and creativity.

"When I went to high school and started singing in the choir, I discovered the beauty of a group of singers harmonizing perfectly together," said Jake Hunsaker of Ogden, UT, who sings tenor in the group. "Music became a way of living, loving, and serving. I kept that feeling with me throughout my mission in Frankfurt, Germany, and immediately upon returning home I resumed my passion for singing as a member of Vocal Point."

The university annually sends representatives of its music school to perform concerts in the historic village of Nauvoo, IL. Vocal Point will receive the honor in 2011. While in the neighborhood, the singers will travel to Memphis for the Thursday night performance.

It was during a similar trip last year that Dr. Harlo Donelson discovered the singers.

"I heard them in concert last summer while I was in Iowa, and knew we had to have them come to Memphis," Harlo stated.

The local music enthusiast added that he felt the show would be a true crowd pleaser, ranking right with the U.S. Air Force Hot Brass concert as far as crowd appeal.

"This is one of the biggest shows we've been able to bring to Memphis," Harlo stated.

The group's resume backs up that claim. In 2007, Vocal Point was voted the nation's favorite collegiate a cappella group in the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America awards. That came one year after taking first place in the International Championships of Collegiate A Capella held in New York City. Vocal Point was on display at the 2002 Winter Olympics, performing at nearly every major venue of the international competitions held in Salt Lake City.

A number of record releases have been made by Vocal Point under the Tantara Records label. The latest, album number eight, entitled Maximum A Capella is now available.

Vocal Point will also be performing for the public on Saturday, July 2 at noon in the Bentonsport Park along the Des Moines River to help kick off the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Similar to Vocal Adrenaline on Glee and a cappella groups that compete on "The Sing Off", you won't be disappointed with Vocal Point's professional sounds and clean fun entertainment.
