Art Program Kicks Off Show Season On Thursday Night

As the 2010-11 school year enters its final month at Scotland County R-I High School, the art program hopes to close out the year in style with a series of special shows.

"Samsara", a senior art exhibit featuring Samara Brush and Sarah Garrett in a combined showcasing, will be held Thursday, May 5th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the high school art room.

The show will be a cumulative work effort from the past three years for the two artists. The art room will be transformed into a gallery that will be open to the public.

"Everyone is welcome to walk through and see these amazing seniors' progress and talent," said art instructor Dustin Harper. "On display will be charcoals, photography, paintings, sculptures, mixed media and a chance to talk to the artists themselves."

For the second time, SCR-I has been selected to host the annual Tri-Rivers All Conference Art Show. The four other TRC schools will travel to Memphis on Wednesday, May 11th for the competition.

A first place plaque will be awarded to the top art school and individual artists will compete to win trophies in their respective media.

A guest judge will award the prizes following the show, which is open to the public from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the high school gym.

"Please come and be a part of the growing support of the fine arts program," Harper stated.

The fine arts program will be on display again at the annual SCR-I Junior and Senior Art Show. The grand opening is Friday, May 13th, at 6 p.m. The show will run until 8 p.m., with a guest judge presenting awards at 7 p.m.

"Touring the artwork would take a few minutes but the moral support left behind will last a lifetime," said Harper.

The end-of-the-year exhibit will display all the 7th - 12th grade student work from the 2010-2011 year.

"Normally held in the hallways of the school, this year we have moved venues," said Harper. "The show will be held at the Farley's furniture buildings on 418 Grand Ave. in Memphis, across from Gas & More."
