SCR-I Elementary Summer School Dates Set
"Oh The Places We'll Go" is the theme for the 2011 summer school at Scotland County R-I Elementary School. The Dr. Seuss book Oh the Places You'll Go is the basis for the program that will run for 3 weeks beginning May 31 and concluding on June 17, 2011.
Children who will be entering kindergarten this fall may enroll as pre-kindergarten students and students who are completing Kindergarten through Sixth grade are also eligible to attend.
Students may choose to attend weekly sessions or enroll for all three.
The 15-day session will begin with a week of work centered on Dr. Seuss and the lessons that may be learned from his works as they pertain to the selection of jobs and careers as well as trying new things.
Week two will focus on studying character traits demonstrated in the children author's work. The final five days will deal with fitness and fun.
Transportation is provided for summer school as well as free breakfast and lunch. Students from other districts may enroll, but they must arrange their own transportation.
"Summer school will focus on the places that we may go in our local and regional communities," said SCR-I Elementary School Principal Rhonda McBee. "We are tentatively planning a train ride from the depot in La Plata, Missouri, a trip down Main Street in Memphis and a trip to Kirksville to visit the Missouri Conservation Center and the Thousand Hills Lake."
Summer school handbooks have been sent home from school with all eligible students. The guidelines highlight a desire to offer enrichment opportunities for the children through additional instruction targeting improvement and advancement of communication arts, math, social studies and science.
Summer school will be in session from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The school will open at 7:30 a.m.
A grand prize drawing for a Nintendo 3DS will be held for all students with perfect attendance for the entire 15 days.
To enroll your child or children, please visit the elementary school to pick up an application or call the office for more information (660) 465-8532.
