New Online Services Unveiled at Scotland County Memorial Library

Working on a school report, but mom isn't available to take you to the library? Or perhaps you simply wish to verify a fact with a reliable reference source from your office. Now you can do both, plus plenty more with the World Book Online, now available through the Scotland County Memorial Library website.

Patrons of the library simply need to visit the site http://scotland.lib.mo.us/ and enter their library card number to gain free access to the new offering.

The website is far more than the standard reference collection that World Book was been known as for years. The World Book Web resource offers three different levels; for children, young adults and adults.

Kids using the resource have easy access to a dictionary, materials on important people and maps as well as lots of educational games, activities and science projects.

The standard resource pages are filled with colorful graphics as well as video clips, bringing to life research projects on famous people, sports and hobbies, places, art, world religions, science, math, plants and animals, history and government.

The mid-level information center provides more than 10,0000 biographies, sortable by world leaders, athletes, authors, inventors, explorers and more. The site also offers research tools, helping the young report writers with tips on how to research, create timelines and cite sources.

It also offers the technically savvy a portal for retrieving e-books, which can be freely downloaded to electronic reading tablets, offering a new wave electronic method of checking out books from the library.

The Info Finder, as it is labeled, provides links to a variety of world newspapers as well as other current events headlines.

The traditional Reference Center, the third tier of the site, is filled with standard research materials as well as links to government resources, computer and internet tutorials and lots of "How to: resources. Another interesting feature is the Interactive Earth link for all your geography questions.

Librarian Melissa Schuster stated the service represents an investment by the institution in an effort to bring the local library to the homes of its users.

Another similar project is the Learning Express Library, also available via the SCML website. The site offers more than 700 online practice tests helping users prepare for such things as the ACT, GED and citizenship tests as well as numerous job search and skills improvement projects.

The programs range from elementary school to college students.

Learning Express Library is available through the website with use of the patron's library card number.

Other online services new to the library include the ability to now reserve materials via the website. Schuster stated patron's simply need to set up an account at the library, which includes the creation of a pin number.
