Arbor Day Foundation Names Memphis Tree City USA Community

For the 18th consecutive year, Memphis has been named a Tree City USA by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation recognizing the town's commitment to urban forestry.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Memphis has again met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: maintaining a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

"As a continuing project we are again offering a free tree to anyone that will help with their survival," said superintendent Roy Monroe. "This would include not injuring the bark of the tree with weed eaters or lawnmowers."

The city will plant the tree on the right of way in front of the homeowners house. The species will be determined by the tree ordinance and availability.
