Rising Fuel Costs Result in Trash Surcharge
Rising fuel costs are impacting Memphis residents' trash collection service. Veolia Environmental Services announced a $0.37 price hike for Memphis residential customers as part of the contractual fuel surcharge agreement.
The price hike took effect April 1 and will last through June 30th.
The increase was based on the 2nd quarter average diesel fuel price, which was $3.37 per gallon. The contract with the city of Memphis allows Veolia to levy a fuel surcharge whenever fuel costs exceed $3 per gallon. The community experienced a four-cent surcharge in the first quarter.
Trash pickup will now cost $10.74 per month for residential customers, with the senior citizen rate increasing to $9.14 per month.
