Boyer Becomes Winningest Coach in Arkansas State History

On February 26th Arkansas State (16-13, 9-7) posted a 54-51 victory over the University of Arkansas Little Rock (UALR 19-7, 13-2) in Sun Belt Conference women's basketball action at the ASU Convocation Center.

With the victory, ASU head coach Brian Boyer became the winningest head coach in ASU basketball history, chalking up his 197th career win to lead all women's and men's head coaches.

Brian is a 1988 graduate of Scotland County R-I High School. He is the son of Ronnie and Judy Boyer.

UALR came into the game having wrapped up the Sun Belt Conference West Division title.

Arkansas State controlled the game inside. The Red Wolves outscored UALR 32-12 in the paint and out-rebounded the Trojans 45-34, including a 15-10 advantage on the offensive glass.

"That was certainly the key to the game," said Boyer. "We have been a team all year long that when we have had success inside, we have given ourselves a chance to win."

Arkansas State held a 53-51 lead with 11 seconds to play. Following a Trojan timeout, ASU junior guard Meghan Lewis blocked a three-point attempt by UALR's Janette Merriex with three seconds to play, and McDowell grabbed the rebound and added a free throw with a second remaining to set the final score.

"I couldn't be more proud of this group for their fight and energy all night long," said Boyer. "I think the biggest thing is that it was one of those nights where we were great offensively, and I don't know that we were always great defensively but we always seemed to be pretty good all the way through. It seemed like tonight, we had the ability to match each possession."

"You get into the last few minutes of a game like this, and you just do the best you can," Boyer added. "And tonight, it just worked out."

Through 12 seasons as head coach at Arkansas State University, Brian Boyer's name has become synonymous with success and the women's basketball program. Entering his 12th season as head coach at ASU, Boyer was second on the ASU career win chart with a record of 181-153.

Under Boyer's guidance, Arkansas State has reached the Women's National Invitation Tournament four times, including three of the past seven seasons. He led the Red Wolves to the 2003-04 Sun Belt East Division Championship, the program has produced 18 All-Sun Belt Conference players with Boyer at the helm, and Boyer was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year following the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons. Entering the season his 96 career Sun Belt Conference victories ranked him fifth all-time in career conference wins.

Boyer came to ASU in 1995 spending four seasons as an assistant for former head coach Jeff Mittie, who is now the head coach at TCU.

A graduate of Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph, with a bachelor's degree in education, Boyer was an assistant coach for the men's program for six seasons, including the last three, which he spent as an assistant with the women's program as well.

As an assistant to the men's team, Missouri Western was a NCAA Division II Tournament participant five years (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1995) and won two conference championships. As a women's assistant, Boyer and Missouri Western made two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 1995 and the Elite Eight the previous season.
