Fire Destroys Garage at Rural Memphis Residence
The tranquillity of a winter snow storm Wednesday night was interrupted by a tragedy for a rural Memphis family who lost their garage and all its contents to a fire Wednesday evening, January 19th.
The Scotland County Fire Department was dispatched to the Jim Curry residence on Highway 15 north of Memphis at 9:27 p.m.
Upon arrival at the home, the fire department found the garage, located west of the home, was fully engulfed by flames. Firemen quickly brought the blaze under control but the garage and its contents were a total loss. The fire destroyed two vehicles as well as a riding lawn mower and numerous other items stored in the building.
The blaze was believed to have started in the western part of the building and firemen indicated they believed the truck parked there may have been the source of the blaze.
Fire Chief Jimmie Winn indicated 20 volunteer firemen answered the call, taking five fire trucks to the scene where they battled below-freezing temperatures in addition to the fire, which featured several minor explosions due to welding gas tanks and other shop items stored in the garage.
