Senior Center to Host Healthy Living Workshops

Grants from the Center for Disease Control and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services are funding free sessions in Memphis. Live Like Your Life Depends on It can be useful in developing a healthier life style for anyone. The workshop series is a partnering project of the Shelbina Senior Nutrition Center, NEMO Area Agency on Aging, the Northeast Missouri Regional Arthritis Center, and the Department of Health and Senior Services. Each week the group discusses helpful options for people to practice daily living skills. This helps each person to feel better control over the challenges of aging, arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, chronic pain, osteoporosis, diabetes, asthma, heart disease and others.

Examples of covered topics include exercise; nutrition; appropriate use of medications; and communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals. Interactive, fun sessions are facilitated by two trained leaders, both of whom are living with a chronic disease themselves.

The program was developed by researchers at the Patient Education Research Center at Stanford University to help people with chronic conditions gain self-confidence in their ability to manage their own health. It is the process in which the workshop is taught that makes it effective. Sessions are highly participative, where mutual support and success builds each person's confidence in his or her ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Family members caring for a person with a chronic disease often benefit from this class series and are encouraged to attend.

Participants will learn to:

∑ Improve your knowledge of living a healthy life with or being at risk for having a chronic condition

∑ Identify the latest medical and pain management approaches

∑ Develop a safe, individualized exercise program with realistic options for self

∑ Manage fatigue and stress more effectively

∑ Find solutions to problems caused by aging or your condition

∑ Identify ways to deal with anger, fear, frustration and depression

∑ Discuss the role of nutrition in chronic disease management

∑ Use new ways to communicate with family and friends

The workshop will be held at the Scotland County Senior Center, 301 West Monroe St, Memphis. The workshop will have six sessions, meeting each Friday afternoon from 12:30 - 2:30 pm. Each session lasts about two hours. The sessions will be held January 14, 21, 28, and February 2,11, and 18. Door prizes and incentives will be offered each week for those attending.
