Photo Publicity Helps Nab ATM Theft Suspect
While it has a long way to go to catch up with the popular television program America's Most Wanted, a local media outlet played a role in the apprehension of an area man on suspicion of fraud.
The Memphis Police Department reported the arrest of Shane Shafer, 24, of Downing on charges of fraudulent use of a credit or debit device, a class A misdemeanor. The case stemmed from the use of a stolen debit card in Memphis last month.
Investigators published a photo of the suspect in the Memphis Democrat newspaper in December 2010, resulting in a number of leads that ultimately led officers to Shafer.
"We had exhausted our normal avenues of investigation without identifying the suspect we had on video at two local ATM machines," said Police Chief Bill Holland. "Once we put the picture in the paper, we had several leads that ultimately resulted in the suspect being identified."
Shafer was wanted for questioning in the case for several weeks before ultimately being apprehended last week by the Adair County Sheriff's Department near Brashear.
He is being held in the Scotland County Jail on a $5,000 cash only bond.
