SCR-I Survives Sluggish Scoring Start to Stop Milan 64-49

Three misses at point blank range to open the contest Friday night didn't bode well for Scotland County, but the Tigers road out a slow start to the night on offense to rally and knock off Milan 64-49 and improve to 2-0 in conference play.

The Wildcats opened the game with a 9-0 lead before SCR-I was able to get on the scoreboard. The Tigers had plenty of good looks, but spent the first four minutes of the contest wondering if there was a lid on the basket.

Sabe Sears made a free throw at the 4:28 mark and Andrew Mathes cleaned up the miss on the second attempt with a score off the offensive rebound. SCR-I forced a turnover on the press and seconds later Kasey Dial scored on the fast break to trim the deficit to 9-5.

But the Wildcats answered back and led 11-7 to close out the first period.

Milan saw its lead grow to as many as 10 points early in the second period despite three pointers by Dakota Wells and Drew Miller.

But that's when Sabe Sears took over. The senior scored seven points down the stretch to bring the Tigers back. He scored on an offensive rebound that gave the Tigers their first lead with under a minute left in the first half.

Scotland County's full court press took its toll in the third period and put SCR-I on top to stay. Harley Stone converted on a pair of fast break opportunities created by Milan turnovers. Kasey Dial had five quick points to start the second half as well helping push the Tigers ahead 34-30 and forcing a Milan timeout with 4:11 left in the period.

The Wildcats pulled within two points to open the fourth period before the Tigers finally put the contest away with a 17-6 run to end the game. Mathes started the final push with a basket in the paint. He scored on an offensive rebound before Stone converted a pair of buckets. Dial put the punctuation on the victory with a deep three pointer.

Dial finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Sears added 16 points and Stone had 11 for the winners. Milan was led in scoring by Mason Clark with 16 points and Derek Price with 13 points.

The Tigers improved to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in the Tri-Rivers Conference. The TRC schedule will feature home and away series versus all five league teams for a total of 10 conference games in 2010-11.
