Bulldogs Bounce SCR-I From Tournament Title Game
In the first two minutes of Saturday's championship tilt at the Novinger Tournament, Scotland County looked like the state-ranked squad. The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Unfortunately over the next 34 minutes, it was La Plata that appeared to be the squad headed to Columbia at the end of the season for the state playoffs. The Bulldogs rallied to pull ahead to close the first period and then dominated over the next three quarters to dispatch SCR-I 71-37.
Brock Bondurant took advantage of his first start of the year, scoring the game's opening bucket. Sabe Sears scored on a drive to the hoop and then brought the SCR-I fans to their feet with a steal and a three point play on the fast break. A bucket by Andrew Mathes made it 9-0.
But La Plata's full-court press began to take its toll on the Tigers as well as mounting foul trouble. Mathis and Harley Stone each picked up two quick fouls to handcuff Coach Lance Campbell whose bench had been thinned by an injury to Derrick Muntz.
La Plata responded with an 18-5 run to close the first quarter up by four points.
Turnovers took their toll on the Tigers in the second period as La Plata put the game away with a 25-6 run. After struggling from the perimeter in the opening period, La Plata knocked down four three pointers in the second quarter to fuel the run.
Sears started the second half with a pair of buckets, but La Plata continued to hit on all cylinders. Birdie Buck poured in nine points as the bulldogs outscored SCR-1 23-10 to extend the lead to 66-30 and keep the clock running in the fourth quarter.
Sears finished with 13 points to lead Scotland County (2-2) in scoring. Dakota Wells added seven points. Buck led four Bulldogs in double figures with 20 points.
