Scotland County Blows Out Bevier 77-24 in Tourney Opener
Turnovers took their toll on the Tigers in the season opener, so it was only fitting that SCR-I turned the tables on Bevier in the opening round of the Novinger tournament, forcing more than 20 first half miscues by the Wildcats en route to a blowout.
The second seeded Tigers got off to a slow start, scoring just two points in the games first four minutes, a basket by Andrew Mathes. But SCR-I made up for it with a 14-2 run to close the first period.
Dakota Wells sparked the run with five points off the bench. He and Drew Miller connected on back-to-back three pointers to push the lead to 10-2.
Scotland County's full-court press began taking its toll in the final minutes of the opening period as Mathes, Kasey Dial and Brock Bondurant all converted on fast break opportunities.
That proved to be the theme of the second period as SCR-I blew the game open with the press forcing turnovers and feeding the fast break. Dial was the main benefactor. The senior exploded for a 20-point second quarter.
Dial's three-point play made the score 35-10 with 2:18 left in the first half.
The Tigers closed the first half on a 16-1 run in the final two minutes fueled by three pointers from Dial and Wells to push the margin to 51-11.
Wells continued the hot shooting from the perimeter, connecting on his third shot from behind the arc as the lead expanded to 56-11 early in the third period.
Lee Tague scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half as the Tigers rolled to the 63-17 lead to close the third period.
Even with the running clock in the fourth period, SCR-I tacked on 14 points to make the final margin 77-24.
Dial finished with 24 points to lead the Tigers (1-1). Tague finished with 12 points and Wells added 11 as all nine Tigers got into the scorebook.
The Tigers advance to a Thursday night semifinal against the winner of Novinger #3) and Brashear (#6). Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
LaPlata, the top seed, has a first round bye, and will play the winner of the Green City (#4) and Milan (#5) game in the other semifinal on Thursday evening. The tourney third place game is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. with the championship game to be played at 7:00 p.m.
