Home Opener Slips Away From SCR-I In Final Inning

Photo finishes are generally reserved for horse races, but Tuesdayís home opener for the Scotland County softball team came down to the wire as close as a ball game possibly can with the final out of the contest recorded at the plate, erasing the tying run.

Unfortunately for SCR-I fans, it was the wrong Tigers taking home the win, as Brashear edged the home team 2-1.

The Lady Tigers in blue and white struck first, jumping ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first frame. Bethany Rader recorded a two-out base knock before Skyler Alderton drove her home with a triple.

That looked like it might be all Megan Creek would need. The sophomore hurler took the mound for the first time in 2010 and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

Unfortunately SCR-I was unable to pad the lead. Loren Smith had a base hit in the fourth and Cali Holt led off the fifth inning with a single but SCR-I was unable to add to the lead.

That proved costly, as Brashear finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth despite the Lady Tigers best defensive efforts to keep them scoreless. A leadoff double by Brashear was erased by a perfect throw from center fielder Elizabeth Duzan. The junior fielded a base hit and threw home, hitting the cutoff and catching the Brashear runner in between third and home where she was tagged out. Smith then gunned down the base runner trying to steal second base. But the Tigers added another hit and took advantage of an SCR-I error to finally push a run across and tie the score at 1-1.

Bethany Rader took over the pitching duties in the seventh. Brashear used a walk, a passed ball and an SCR-I error to pull ahead 2-1.

SCR-I mounted one final challenge. Smith led off the frame with a base on balls. Holt worked a walk to put courtesy runner Anna Hirner in scoring position. With two outs, Katie Howard drove a base hit to leftfield. After initially being held at third base, Hirner was sent home after the throw got away from the catcher, but the Brashear defenders were able to recover and make the play at the plate to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Smith and Holt were both 1-2 at the plate while Alderton, Rader and Howard all went 1-3.

Creek pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits. She struck out six and walked one. Rader was tagged with the loss, allowing an unearned run in one inning of work. She walked one and struck out two without allowing a hit.
