Late Inning Heroics Make Lady Tigers Winners in Season Opener

The Scotland County softball team got the 2010 season off on the right foot even if the Lady Tigers coach was a bit worried about the Lady Tigers causing some self inflicted injuries to their shoes.

SCR-I prevailed 7-4 over Highland on August 23rd with some late inning heroics that Coach Kim Small pointed out may not have been necessary.

ďWe sort of shot ourselves in the foot on several occasions, making the game closer than it could have been,Ē said the coach. ďThere were some mistakes on defense and running the bases that cost us some runs, but the team overcame that to pick up the victory.Ē

The Lady Tigers made a winner out of freshman Bethany Rader in her pitching debut.

One of the newest Lady Tigers actually made her presence felt with the bat first. She had a two-out single in the top of the first inning. Clean-up hitter Skyler Alderton delivered an RBI double to make the score 1-0. Only a good throw to the plate kept the tally at a lone mark, as Alderton was gunned down at the plate after Loren Smith singled.

Highland quickly tied the score in the bottom of the frame, as a leadoff walk scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.

Freshman Hailey Dial had a memorable first varsity at bat, doubling to start the second inning. After Courtney Jackson reached on an error, Elizabeth Duzan delivered an RBI single. Megan Creek reached on an error before Rader made it 4-1 with an RBI single.

Highland chipped away at the lead with unearned runs in the second and third innings before finally pulling even with another lone tally in the bottom of the fifth.

SCR-I had scoring opportunities in the third and fifth innings, with two runners on during each rally, but failed to add to the scoreboard.

That changed in the top of the seventh. Creek led off with a base hit. After Alderton reached on an error, Smith came through with a clutch base hit to plate the two runners. She would eventually score on a passed ball making it 7-4.

Rader finished out the victory with a solid seventh frame to get SCR-I off to a 1-0 start on the year. She went the distance, giving up four runs, only two earned, in seven innings of work. The freshman allowed nine hits and walked just one while striking out seven.

Smith led the solid team performance at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBI. Rader, Alderton and Dial all went 2-4 with Duzan and Creek going 1-4 to account for the teamís 11 hits.
