Memphis Legion Baseball Team on Losing Skid

by Brock Bondurant

The Memphis American Legion Post #219 baseball team dropped four games over the weekend to Trenton and Quincy. A lack of offense and defense provided a false representation of the Memphis talent.

In Trenton on Saturday, Post #219 was shut down 5-1 in the first game. Double plays ended both the first and second innings for Memphis with opportunities for runs that would not come again. Memphis finally got on the board in the fourth, as Ben Shannan scored on an error to make the score 1-1. Trenton propelled back in front in the sixth, scoring four runs to go up 5-1. Memphis would go down one-two-three in the seventh to give Trenton the win. Memphis was held to just two hits in the loss.

In the second game of the Trenton double header, Trenton jumped out in front early against Memphis pitcher Jordan Wheeler, scoring nine runs before a Memphis runner could cross home plate. This finally happened in the fourth as Drew Miller scored on a passed ball.

With two outs in the fifth, and the ten-run-rule looming, Cody Avery came through once again for Memphis, hitting a two-run double to keep Post #219 alive for one more half inning. The four-run fifth kept Memphis going until Trenton scored two in their half of the inning, winning 16-5.

On Sunday, the Legion team traveled to Quincy for two games. Expecting a plush field, Post #219 was surprised to find an overgrown, poorly kept diamond. In dire need of professional help, the Quincy groundskeeper turned to none other than Bible Groveís own Chuck Kigar. Kigar push-mowed the Blue Devilsí infield prior to the first pitch to allow a playable playing surface for the Legion men.

Memphis used Kigarís skill early on as Harley Stone knocked in Drew Miller on a sacrifice in the first inning. Unfortunately, this would be the last Memphis run scored until the seventh, leading Quincy to a 10-2 win.

The second game of the day would be no better, as Memphis lost 16-2 in just five innings.

Memphis racked up just 10 runs on 16 hits over the weekend. Post #219 drops to 6-10 on the year.

The Legion team plays Wednesday at home versus Highland at 7:00 p.m. On Friday, Memphis will travel to Westphailia, MO to compete in the Zone 1 tournament.
