Lister, Missouri All-Stars Prevail in Senior Softball Salute

Being an all-star isnt all glitz and glamour. But after spending 16 innings behind the plate catching some of the hardest throwing pitchers in the Tri-state area, former SCR-I standout Kelly Lister, was still all smiles.

Thats because her Missouri squad came out on top in both games of the Senior Softball Salute double header held July 4th at Harry Phillips Field in Quincy, IL.

The Missouri All-Stars won the opener 4-1 in 10 innings before besting the Illinois squad 11-1 in game 2.

Lister doned the catching gear for every pitch of the twin bill not bad considering she wasnt even on the Missouri roster until a week prior to the event.

Apparently they did not receive any nominations from the school, so originally there was no one from Scotland County on the team, Lister said.

But that changed when Missouri coach, Palmyra skipper Brian Wosman, identified the fact his roster was in desperate need of a catcher.

Several of the Missouri players were familiar with Lister, a Tri-Rivers all-conference performer behind the plate. They suggested her to the games organizers and the rest is history.

I guess a few of the girls on the team mentioned my name, and they finally got a hold of me and asked if I would like to play, Kelly said.

Lister isnt one to turn down an opportunity to play softball. The four-year starter at SCR-I was in the midst of the summer softball season as a member of the Macon Travelers. She has spent the past four summers on the softball circuit playing in tournaments across the Midwest.

That made the Senior Softball Salute a bit of a reunion for the former Lady Tiger.

Im on the same team this summer with Brittney [Brittney Miller of Knox County] and Ive played with three or four of the other girls in the past on summer traveling teams, she said. The first year I traveled I was on a team with Kaity Shultz of Pittsfield, so I even had some friends on the Illinois team.

Miller and Lister proved to be a near perfect battery in the 11-1 win in game two. That followed up a record setting performance by Palmyras Taylor Baxter in the opener. She struck out a Salute record 20 Illinois batters in 10 innings of work.

Lister put her name in the record book as well, tying a Salute single-game record with three hits in game two of the contest. Overall she had four hits on the day.

Baxters team Jessica Van Nostrand was the hitting star for Missouri. She cracked three home runs, including the game winner in extra innings of game one.

It was a lot of fun to get to play with these girls one last time, Lister said.

She has one remaining tournament with the summer traveling team before shell hang up the cleats until heading to college in the fall. Kelly will be attending the University of Missouri where shell be part of the nationally ranked Tigers program, working as the bullpen catcher as well as batting practice pitcher.

Missouri now leads the Salute with an 8-6 record over the games seven-year history.
