Scotland County Weight Lifters Piling on the Pounds

In today’s health-conscious world, all the talk is about losing weight, but one group of Scotland County athletes is making the news for adding weight, or at least adding to the total amount they can lift.

The 20 student athletes in the SCR-I conditioning class increased their combined squat, bench and clean lift maximums on average by 90 pounds during the eight-week program.

The student athletes were fueled by old-fashioned chocolate milk, a natural recovery drink that helps promote good health.

Junior Ben Shannan recorded the biggest increase, improving his max lifts in the three categories a combined 150 pounds. Taylor Rader improved his maximum a combined 135 pouinds and Laden Holt was just one pound shy of that total.

Logan Brassfield and Will See set the bar for the bench press with max lifts of 320 pounds. Justin Winn led the way in the squat, lifting 500 pounds while Kyle Shelley had the top clean lift of 280 pounds.

Other triple digit improvements were turned in by Brock Bondurant (110 lbs.), Christian Bradley (103), See (127), Shelley (100), Harley Stone (105) and Winn (125).

Coach Kevin Gundy praised the work done by all the athletes, but pointed out that while some of the lighter at not have broke the 100-pound improvement mark, they were among the strongest kids in the class pound for pound. He pointed to Rod Sears as an example. The junior increased his max lifts by a total of 90 pounds, pushing his bench press to 245 lbs. while squatting 400 lbs. and doing 235 pounds on the clean lift.
