Tigers Avenge Early Season Losses En Route to Tourney Title

Just days after being dispatched by Schuyler County courtesy of the 10-run rule, Scotland County avenged the loss with a 15-8 victory in the opening round of the Knox County Tournament on Saturday.

SCR-I fell behind 1-0 in the second inning before exploding for 11 runs in the following two at bats.

Drew Miller reached on an error to start the second inning. After Dakota Wells was hit by a pitch, Sabe Sears delivered an RBI single in his first at bat of the year after returning from a stress fracture in his foot. Rod Sears drove in the second run on a fielderís choice before Brock Bondurant delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

The Tigers blew the contest open with eight runs in the bottom of the third batting around in the frame. Drew Miller came up big with a 2 RBI double followed by successive RBI singles from Sabe Sears, Justin Winn and Rod Sears.

Harley Stone went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. He allowed eight runs, seven earned on five hits and five walks while striking out nine.

Sabe Sears was a perfect 4-4 in his season debut with three runs scored and two RBI. Rod Sears was 1-2 with three RBI.

The championship game saw SCR-I avenge another early season loss, holding off Highland in a 9-8 win to take home the trophy.

The Cougars scored four times in the top of the ninth to make it close but Ben Shannan shut the door on the rally to finish what he started. The sophomore hurler picked up the complete game win, allowing eight runs, five earned on seven hits and six walks while striking out 11.

Once again the third inning was the key for Scotland County, which batted around en route to plating four runs to go ahead 6-1.

Shannan led off with a walk and stole second base. He scored on a base hit by Mathes. After a base hit by Miller and a walk to Wells loaded the bases, Sabe Sears delivered a two RBI single with the final tally crossing the plate on a Highland error.

The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning when Miller delivered a triple that scored Stone and Mathes to make the score 9-4.
