Hornets Sting SCR-I With Late Home Run to Prevail 6-4

Home runs were a big part of the scoring Monday night at Memphis, but it was a ball that stayed in the park that proved to be the difference as Atlanta escaped with a 6-4 victory over Scotland County on April 19th.

Trailing 4-2, the Tigers had two runners in scoring position when Ben Shannan drove a pitch to deep left field. The ball stayed in the park, as the left fielder made a catch at the fence that prevented three runs.

That proved to be the difference in the contest, as Atlanta tacked on a couple runs late, including a home run in the sixth to prevail 6-4.

The Hornets jumped on top 2-0 in the top of the first. But the Tigers came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Sabe Sears led off with a single. After stealing second base, he advanced to third on an errant pick off attempt. He scored on a two-run home run by Harley Stone that knotted the score.

Atlanta took advantage of an error and three walks in the top of the second to regain the lead 4-2.

Dakota Wells fires a pitch towards home plate during Mondays home game.

In the bottom of the third, Sabe Sears led off with a base hit but was caught stealing. Brock Bondurant followed with a base hit before Stone reached on an error. Shannans deep drive plated Bondurant on a sacrifice fly before Andrew Mathes delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.

Dakota Wells calmed down after a rocky start to shutout the Hornets in the third and fourth innings. He got a little help from the defense in the fourth, when the inning ended with a runner being gunned down at the plate.

SCR-I threatened in the bottom of the fourth. Wells and Rod Sears collected base hits before the inning ended on a double play.

Atlanta broke through in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4 before Wells worked out of the bases-loaded jam.

The Hornets added an insurance tally in the sixth with a home run off reliever Ben Shannan.

Sabe Sears reached on a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate but that was as far as the rally went as Atlanta held on for the victory.

Wells took the loss on the hill, working five innings, and allowing five runs, only three earned. Shannan pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three.

Sabe Sears went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored. Andrew Mathes was 2-3 with an RBI and Stone was 1-4 with a home run and 2 RBI.

The loss drops SCR-I to 3-7 on the season.
