Shannan Leads Tigers to First Victory of Inaugural Baseball Season
Ben Shannan helped lead Scotland County to its first baseball victory in more than 37 years with both his arm and his bat.
The sophomore racked up 16 strikeouts on the mound before giving way to Harley Stone who required the final out of the historic win, the first of this inaugural season for the baseball program at SCR-I.
“He threw a lot of pitches, but over all he had a pretty good day on the bump,” said coach T.J. Young.
Shannan also was one of the heroes at the plate, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles, knocking in three runs for the Tigers in the 10-7 victory.
Ben Shannan rips a base hit during the Tigers home opener versus Linn County. The sophomore had a big game in the team’s first win, a 10-7 victory over Milan.
SCR-I jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but Milan answered to tie the game up in the bottom of the frame. After a scoreless second inning, the Tigers went on to score single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to lead 7-4.
Scotland County added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
Milan crossed the plate three times in its final at bat before Stone came on to strike out the final batter and preserve the 10-7 win.
Shannan was the winning pitcher, going 6 2/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on five hits and seven walks while striking out 16. Stone pitched 1/3 of an inning, allowing one hit and recording one strike out.
Rod Sears went 2-4 at the plate. Stone scored three of the Tigers 10 runs. Dakota Wells, Andrew Mathes and Brock Bondurant each crossed the plate twice in the win.
