Big Sixth Inning Helps Novinger Knock Off SCR-I 9-1
The wheels came off for Scotland County in the sixth inning turning a 2-1 pitchers dual into a lopsided 9-1 victory for the visiting Novinger Wildcats on Friday in Memphis.
“We played really good defense through the first five innings,” said coach T.J. Young. “But in the sixth inning we pretty much imploded, committing at least four errors that blew the game open for Novinger.
Up to that point Dakota Wells had pretty much held Novinger in check, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. The junior hurler was the hard luck loser.
Novinger’s Chris Smith picked up the win, holding the Tigers to just four hits while striking out nine.
Brock Bondurant was 1-4 at the plate and drove in the lone SCR-I run. Andrew Mathes was 1-2 while Ben Shannon and Dakota Wells picked up the other SCR-I hits.
“Novinger was a good team and our kids got their first look at a pitcher with some decent breaking pitches,” Young said. “I thought they made some pretty good adjustments at the plate and I think overall we’re getting better.”
The Tigers 1-3 have a bust week ahead, taking on Salisbury and Schuyler County before traveling to Edina Saturday for the Knox County Tournament.
“It was good for the kids to get the monkey off their backs and get the first win for the program this week,” Young said. “We’ve been pretty fortunate with the weather working in our favor to let us get all of our games in, because we just need to keep playing and getting the much needed experience.”
