Baseball is Back at SCR-I

by Robby Lewis

When Brock Bondurant saw the first base umpire raise his arms to the side calling him safe in the third inning of Scottland County R-I High Schools game with Canton High School, Bondurant wasnt thinking about history.

He was just thinking about getting the base hit.

It was bitter sweet being that was our only hit, Bondurant said. But, it was nice to get on base and nice to bring us back to life after not having a program for 37 years.

The reason this infield single was significant was because it was the first hit for SCR-I since 1973.

Even though the Tigers lost 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday, March 23, the bigger story is the return of baseball.

I think its big for the kids, coach T.J. Young said. It gives them another opportunity to learn a new sport and learn some new skills. It teaches them about teamwork and teaches them about life in general. I think its one of the best games in the world.

The community and board had considered bringing baseball back to Scotland County for several years. Young said the community and board had recently been pushing hard for it, and he was elated when asked if he would coach the team.

Young said despite the score, his team showed a lot of promise in their debut.

It was a good baseball team, Young said. Canton was a good team. I told the kids if we wouldve played bad, they couldve beaten us by 20 or 30.

The team is very young with just two seniors on the team. Young said this is good because it allows the coaching staff to mold them into good ball players without having to break many bad habits.

Weve got kids that got talent, Young said. Theyre just raw. Theyre very raw. They work hard, they listen. Eventually were going to be a pretty good team.

Trevor Harris, one of two seniors on the team, normally plays golf during this time of year.

I chose baseball over golf this year for the fact that its the first year and I knew we needed some numbers, Harris said.

Harris added that he thinks more seniors didnt come out simply because its their last year.

A lot of kids hadnt played ever that are in my class, Harris said. A lot of them decided not to just because the fact they hadnt been out.

While this is the first time playing baseball for some players, Bondurant has played in summer leagues every year since he was little. Bondurant, who plays several other sports, said hearing the news was an exciting moment for him.

It was great, Bondurant said. I remember thinking for a long time what Id do if we played baseball. We finally get it. It was pretty awesome. Im so glad we got it now.

Bondurant said throughout the whole season, the young team would only get better.

Were going to see a lot of improvement, Bondurant said. Just to our next game, youre going to see a lot of improvement from our first game. We got everything coming back next year.

The Tigers will play their home opener at 5 p.m., Tuesday at SCR-I High School.
