LaPlata’s Buzzer Beater Ends SCR-I Regular Season in Defeat
A last-second rally proved all for not as LaPlata’s Hayden Fouch drilled a three pointer at the buzzer to help the state ranked Bulldogs escape Memphis with a 61-58 victory.
Brock Bonduarnt and Dakota Wells came off the bench to score 13 of Scotland County’s 14 first quarter points as SCR-I led by two points after eight minutes of play. Wells connected on a pair of three pointers and Bondurant had seven points, including a three-point play.
The LaPlata defense continued to stifle the SCR-I starters. Brandon Garnett and Andrew Mathes, who started in place of the injured Kyle Shelley connected on the lone field goals of the second period for the starters. Sabe Sears had the only other field goal as LaPlata went ahead 26-21 at the intermission.
The Tigers turned the tide in the third period. Harley Stone had six points and both Garnett and Mathes had a pair of field goals allowing Scotland County to trim the deficit slightly to 41-37. Four different Bulldogs hit three pointers in the third period to keep LaPlata up by four points.
That margin grew to as much as 55-48 before Drew Miller hit a three pointer with just over one minute left to play in the contest. LaPlata pushed the lead back to seven before Garnett made a steal on defense and converted on the fast break to make the score 58-53 with 48 seconds to play.
After Taylor Wheeler missed a pair of free throws, Wells knocked down a deep three pointer. Garnett then stole the in bounds pass and brought the home crowd to its feet when he converted the lay in and was fouled, tying the score at 58-58 with just 4.1 ticks left on the clock.
But Garnett’s free rattled in and out, with LaPlata grabbing the rebound and advancing the ball to the left wing where Fouch launched a three pointer at the buzzer that silenced the Tigers faithful.
Garnett finished with 14 points to lead SCR-I (10-14). Wells had 12 points and Stone and Bondurant each had ninepoints.
