Canton Foils SCR-I Comeback With Last Second Shot

Scotland County saw a last minute rally elude it Tuesday night as Canton slipped past the Tigers 52-51 in a final 60 seconds that SCR-I would love to have to do over again.

Brandon Garnett put SCR-I on top 51-50 when he made a steal on the in-bounds pass and converted the lay-in. But the Tigers failed to convert at the free throw line, and committed a pair of costly turnovers down the stretch. Canton crashed the boards on its final scoring opportunity of the night, grabbing several offensive rebounds before finally putting in what proved to be the game winning basket with just over 10 seconds left to play.

Canton jumped out to a 17-12 advantage in the first period behind 10 points from Nick Janney. SCR-Is lone senior in the lineup, Brandon Garnett stepped up to shoulder some of the scoring load caused by the absence of fellow senior Kyle Shelley who missed the game with a hip injury.

Kasey Dial puts up the three pointer over the outstretched hand of Cantons Nick Janneyduring Tuesday nights contest in Memphis.

Scotland County trimmed the deficit to 29-27 at the intermission as Dakota Wells sparked the offense off the bench with a couple second quarter hoops while Garnett continued his solid performance.

The scoring slowed for both squads in the third period, but a three pointer by Colt Carper helped Canton once again lead by four points with just eight minutes left to play.

The Tigers cut into that lead at the free throw line. Kasey Dial and Andrew Mathes both hit two free throws, while Garnett was four of six from the charity stripe helping keep SCR-I close.

Baskets by Harley Stone and Dial made it a one-possession game when Garnett came up with the huge steal and the lay in to put SCR-I ahead 51-50.

The Tigers made a pair of stops on defense down the stretch but a pair of missed free throws and a turnover allowed Canton one final shot at the win. Unfortunately for the Tigers it turned into three or four shots as Scotland County could not come up with the defensive rebound before Garrett Serbin finally put the second effort back up and in to give Canton the 52-51 win.

Garnett finished with 17 points to lead Scotland County (10-13) in scoring. Dial and Mathes each finished with 10 points. Janney led all scorers with 21 points. Serbin had 11 points and Carper and Steffen Simmons added 10 points each for Canton (11-12).
