Schuyler County ĎStumpsí Lady Tigers in Conference Finale

When Scotland County opened Friday nightís hoops action at Queen City in a 1-3-1 defense the Lady Tigers looked like they had Schuyler County stumped. The new look seemed to confuse the Rams, allowing SCR-I to open the game with a 10-2 run.

But over the next 28 minutes it was Scotland County who got ďStumped.Ē Schuyler Countyís standout guard Kaitlin Stump poured in 29 points to help rally the Rams for a 52-41 victory.

The Lady Tigers had the offense to go with the 1-3-1 early in the game. Ashley Tague connected on a jumper and Anna Duley and Skyler Alderton both converted drives to the hoop to open the early lead. Cali Holt had the next four points, making the score 10-2 with 4:33 left in the first period.

But Schuyler County answered with a run of its own, outscoring SCR-I 12-1 including a buzzer beater by Stump that put the home team on top 14-11.

Jamie Shaw trimmed the deficit to one with a couple of free throws, but Stump answered with a four-point play, sinking the free throw after being fouled on a made three pointer. Leza Ford kept the Rams faithful on their feet as she blocked a shot on the defensive end and then went coast-to-coast for the score to make it 20-13 and force an SCR-I time out.

The stoppage helped slow down Schuyler County, but SCR-I was unable to take advantage of the lull, with its lone points coming on a bucket by Tague that left the team trailing 22-16 at the break.

SCR-I was unable to get any closer in the third period, failing to take advantage of several free throw opportunities that saw the margin grow to 28-18 before Tague and Alderton both connected on three pointers.

Schuyler County closed the third period on a 5-0 run that built a 38-24 bulge for the home team heading into the fourth quarter.

Kiley Frazier and Courtney Jackson gave the team an offensive boost in the fourth period off the bench. The sophomores fueled a 10-2 run that was capped by an Alderton three pointer that made the score 45-38 with 2:57 left to play.

But that was as close as SCR-I would get as Stump and Ford took care of the ball in the final three minutes, running out the clock on any possible SCR-I rally.

Scotland County (13-8, 4-3 TRC) was led in scoring by Tague with 13 points. Stump had 29 points and Ford finished with 16 for the Rams (14-8, 4-1 TRC).
