Defense Drives SCR-I to Conference Victory Over Putnam County
A dominating first half defensive performance allowed Scotland County to get back over the .500 mark in the Tri Rivers Conference with 38-28 win at Unionville last week.
SCR-I held the Lady Midgets to just three field goals in the opening 16 minutes en route to an 18-8 advantage at the break.
Jamie Shaw matched that total in the first period, hitting a trio of shots to put the Lady Tigers on top 10-4.
Ashley Tague took over the scoring load in the second period. She had seven points as the lead grew to double digits. It could have been even better, but SCR-I made just two of seven free throws leaving the door open for a Putnam County rally.
The offense cooled off after the intermission. The Lady Tigers lone field goal came from long range as Skyler Alderton connected from behind the arc. Fortunately Shaw was a perfect four of four from the charity stripe keeping Putnam County from trimming the deficit more than 25-16 with eight minutes to play.
The fourth quarter was more of the same as Ashley Tague and Cali Holt made seven of eight free throws down the stretch, Tague had eight of her game-high 15 points in the finale eight minutes to secure the victory.
Scotland County improved to 11-6 and 2-1 in the TRC. Shaw pitched in with 12 points while Alderton finished with five points. Sarah Riley led Putnam County with 11 points.
