Tigers Conclude 7th Grade Hoops Season With 8-3 Mark

The Scotland County seventh grade boys basketball team recently wrapped up a successful 2009 season.

The Tigers opened the year with a 25-19 victory over Clark County on November 3rd in Memphis. SCR-I opened up a 13-4 lead in the first period behind two Jacobs. Jacob Blessing and Jacob Hull combined for nine first period points. Scotland County held off a late rally by the Indians to prevail.

Points were hard to come by three-nights later as Clark County escaped Memphis with a 17-13 win.

The Tigers rebounded with a 28-25 win over Knox County. Tyler Buford got SCR-I off to a solid start with six first quarter points to put his team ahead 10-4. William McRobert had eight second-half points to help SCR-I hold on for the win.

The Tigers improved to 3-1 with a 25-11 victory at Unionville on November 13th. The Tigers recovered from a slow start to blow the game open with a 10-3 run in the third period. Buford finished with nine points and McRobert had eight in the win.

Scotland County had one of its biggest offensive nights of the year on November 16 in Queen City, pouring in 39 points to blow out Schuyler County 39-18. Blessing nailed a pair of three pointers in the first quarter as the Tigers jumped on top 14-4 and never looked back. He finished with 13 points on the night. Bailey Johnston added eight points.

Milan was the next victim of the Tigers scoring display as SCR-I mashed the Wildcats 35-5 on November 18. The game was over early as Hull, Johnston and McRobert combined for 12 first quarter points to build an 18-0 lead after seven minutes of play.

Scotland County brought home the championship of the Schuyler County tourney by besting Putnam County 34-15. Mason VanHoozen fueled a second quarter rally to put the Tigers on top for good at 20-9. Johnston and Hull each had eight points in the win while VanHoozen and Blessing each added seven points.

Knox County ended the SCR-I winning streak at five, besting the Tigers 37-25 on December 1 in Edina. Hull and Johnston led SCR-I in scoring with eight points each.

Scotland County rebounded with a 30-9 win over Schuyler County on December 4 in Memphis. Buford, Hull and Van Hoozen did the scoring in a key first period but it was a defensive performance by the team that built an 11-0 lead. Hull topped the scorebook with 11 points in the win.

The Tigers made it two in a row with a 30-15 win at Canton on December 7. Once again it was solid defensive effort that helped the Tigers lead 15-4 at half time. VanHoozen put the game away with a pair of three pointers in the third period. Johnston had nine points to pace the winners.

The year came to an end on December 11 with a 39-27 loss to Kirksville. SCR-I led 16-14 at the break but the game slipped away in the third period when Kirksville went on a 21-2 run.

Scotland County finished the year with an 8-3 record. The team consisted of Jacob Blessing, Trevor Westhoff, Kody Parkins, Jacob Hull, Bailey Johnston, Dakota Murray, William McRobert, Kyler Burkhiser, Mason VanHoozen and Tyler Buford.
