Sub-Zero Temps Slow Down Youth Deer Season Finale
With below zero temperatures across most of the state, Missouriís youth hunters had to battle the elements when heading to the woods for the final segment of the firearms season on January 2nd and 3rd.
The poor conditions resulted in a slight decline in the deer harvest for the weekend hunt. Youth hunters checked in 1,706 across the state, down from 1,772 last year.
Hunters in northeast Missouri accounted for the majority of that decline, as 52 fewer deer where checked in across the northeast recording region.
Only 21 deer were harvested in Scotland County, down 12 from last yearís 33 deer harvest. Overall the northeast region checked in 299 deer, below the 351 mark set last year.
Youth hunters checked in just seven deer in Clark County, 21 in Knox County and 17 in Schuyler County. Macon and Sullivan counties topped the region with 37 deer harvested.
Statewide, Wayne County was tops with 45 deer checked in followed by Macon, Sullivan and Osage counties with 37.
