Kay W. Ames, 87, of Keokuk, IA died Saturday, November 27, 2010 at his home.

He was born on February 8, 1923 in DeKoven, KY, the son of Percy and Martha Kean Ames. On September 20, 1946 he was united in marriage to Ethel I. Burkett. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Rector and her husband Dave of Keokuk, IA and Janie Shipman and her husband Doug of Montrose, IA, three granddaughters, Jessica Myhre and her husband Jason of Donnellson, IA, Teri Herring and her husband Delbert of Luray, MO and Leah Johnson of Keokuk, IA, two grandsons, Nathan Rector and his wife Jayme of Spokane, WA and Andy Rector and his wife Jessie of Macomb, IL, ten great-grandchildren, one brother, Percy (Pooch) Ames of Keokuk, IA, three sisters, Wanda Lombard of Michigan, Ginny Barzilla of Evansville, IN and Velda Templeton and her husband Don of Sturgis, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Stan Ames, Kenneth Ames, Wendell Ames, Wesley (Suz) Ames and his twin, Carroll Ames, and four sisters, Ruby Lulack, Gloria Dennis, Emma Holland and Jane Wilke.

Kay was a veteran of the U.S. Army and proudly served his country during WWII.

Kay worked as a carpenter alongside two of his brothers and also served as a pastor.

He was a member of the Alexandria Baptist Church. He was a former pastor at Alexandria Baptist Church, Wyaconda Baptist Church, Parkview Baptist Church and Golden's Point Christian Church.

Kay enjoyed carpentry as well as playing the train whistle on the harmonica and spending time with his family. In his early years he played softball and was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Dallas Cowboys.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA with Pastors Nathan Rector, Andy Rector and Clegguart Mitchell officiating. Burial with military rites was in the Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA.

A memorial has been established.
