(3/24/1907 – 7/13/2010)

Wallace Robinson was born in rural Verdi, Minnesota to Frank and Jessie Robinson. “Wally” had six brothers and one sister. He attended a one-room country school with only two students in his class. Even though he was a bright student, his education was hampered by the Great Depression. He attended Winona State Teachers College and did some teaching.

He tested into the Post Office Department and was appointed the Verdi postmaster in the late 1930’s. There he met Eileen Ressler, an elementary school teacher, and they were married on April 1, 1939. He then transferred to the post office in St. Paul, Minnesota. Their son, Larry Robinson was born on May 26, 1940 and their daughter, Nadine Robinson Beckert, on March 13, 1942.

He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1944. Following his return from WWII, he transferred from St. Paul to Woodward, Iowa as a rural mail carrier. He enjoyed that job until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. While working as a rural mail carrier, he completely remodeled his home in Woodward and became a flying farmer, farming a quarter section near Brooten, Minnesota. He was always an active person.

He was the adult Sunday School teacher at the Woodward Methodist Church for many years. He served as Worshipful Master of the Woodward Masonic Lodge and Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star and remained a member of the American Legion in Woodward.

He enjoyed playing checkers, bowling and golf, getting a hole-in-one at the age of 83.

His son, Larry, retired from government service, and his wife, Sharon, live in California and have two daughters. Their oldest daughter, Shaheen, works for the U. S. Department of the Treasury in Washington D. C., and second daughter, Ali Ann, is a sign language interpreter and resides with her husband, Tony Artis, in Northern California. Wallace’s daughter, Nadine, and her husband John Beckert live in Kahoka, Missouri. Dr. Beckert and Nadine have two children, Brigitte and Benjamin. Ben is a plastic surgeon in Beaumont, Texas. Dr. Brigitte and her husband Dr. Matt Cormier practice in Kahoka. They have two children, Calissa, age 10 and Carson, age 7, making “Wally” a great grandpa two times.

Funeral services were held Saturday July 17 at Brandt Funeral Home in Woodward, IA. Internment with military honors was at the Woodward Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Woodward American Legion, 1281 300th Street, Woodward, IA 50276.
