Maxine Atkinson, 90 of Downing, Missouri passed away at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Missouri on Sunday, January 17, 2010.

The daughter of Richard Thomas and Allie Myrtle (Allen) Redding, she was born on September 12, 1919 in Bible Grove, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Junior Clair Ross and to this union three children were born, Larry, Garry and Barbara. She was later united in marriage to Ed Atkinson in 1967.

Survivors include her three children, Larry Ross and wife, Phyllis of Fairfield, Iowa, Garry Ross of Downing, Missouri and Barbara Anderson and husband, Larry of Troy, Missouri; one stepson, Ronald Atkinson and wife, Arloa of Queen City, Missouri and his family; six grandchildren, Jim Ross of Fairfield, Iowa, Cindy Brown and husband, Phil of Marion, Iowa, Betsy Caviness and husband, Rob of Mt. Sterling, Iowa, Julie Lewis and husband, Tom of Palm Harbur, Florida, Bruce Anderson and wife, Kellie of Troy, Missouri and Christine Schimpf and husband, Kevin of Raymore, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Wilma Smoot of Downing, Missouri; several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Allie Redding; husbands, Junior Clair Ross on May 27, 1953 and Ed Atkinson on March 2009; one sister, Helen Riley and two brothers, Leonard Redding and Robert Redding.

Maxine and Ed owned and operated the Downing Café for a number of years where they made special friendships with many people in the area.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at the Downing Christian Church in Downing, Missouri with Sonny Smyser, pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith in Lancaster, Missouri assisted by Larry Smith, pastor of the Downing Christian Church officiating. Special CD selections of “The Old Rugged Cross” and “How Great Thou Art” will be provided. Pallbearers were Rob Caviness, Phil Brown, Bruce Anderson, Kevin Schimpf, Bud Donelson and Steve Swindler.

Memorials have been established for the Downing Christian Church or Downing Cemetery. Burial will be in the Downing Cemetery in Downing, Missouri. Arrangements are under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Lancaster and Downing, Missouri.
