NSDAR Hosts Reception to Honor Local Veterans
Local military veterans were recently honored at a reception on November 5, 2010 at the Memphis Presbyterian Church. The event was hosted by Jauflione Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
Regent Susan Miller welcomed all the guests and thanked the veterans for their service. Missouri DAR District Director Nancy Thomas and husband Eddie were among the guests. Regent Miller announced that one of the projects of Missouri DAR Regent Donna Nash for 2010-2012 is to partner with the Honor Flight Network of Kansas City to send as many WWII veterans as possible to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.
A film was shown of the television show featuring a local veteran, WWII sniper Ted Gundy, who was invited to Fort Benning, GA as a guest of the U.S. Army and its Marksmanship Unit to attempt a 1000-yard shot using modern sniper equipment. A highlight of the film was watching Mr. Gundy successfully accomplish the shot on target.
June Kice introduced each veteran in attendance at the reception and each one told something about his military service. The memories and experiences were different for each veteran, but all the stories were very interesting. A number of photos and mementos were displayed by those in attendance. Regent Miller asked Harley Erickson, WWII veteran, to tell about his recent trip to Washington, DC with the Honor Flight.
Refreshments of cookies, nuts, mints, snack mix, coffee, and punch were served. Veterans attending were Oren Erickson, Don Tague, Harley Erickson, Harvey Bergman, Ivan Woods, Don Norton, Dallace Schumacher, Frank Reed, Larry Bloomfield, Alvin Howard, Melinda Briggs, Robert Carney, William Reckenberg, Roy Snodgrass, Clark Mustoe, Tom Owings, George Eggers, Bill Atwater, and Mitch Jayne. Others attending were Nancy and Eddie Thomas, Janet Erickson, Virginia Woods, Celina Erickson, Barbara Howard, Susan Miller, June Kice, Verlee Dauma, Grace Brown, Letha Musgrove, Reta Stott, LeGene Padgett, Joan Cecil, Nelda Billlups, Mary Kay Miles, Jeanie Bissell, and Joanne Aylward.
Regent Miller conducted a short business meeting after the reception. Plans were discussed for the December luncheon to be held at the Presbyterian Church on Thursday, December 2, 2010. The DAR Good Citizenship winner, the winner's parents, and the SC R-1 Guidance Counselor will be special guests. The meal will be prepared by Chapter members. June Kice reported that the family of Lucille Jackson Boyer had made a generous donation to the Chapter in memory of Lucille.
Remember to fly the U.S. Flag on Veterans Day, November 11, in honor of all the men and women who have served in the military.
