Driver Hurt After Blacking Out Behind Wheel
A medical issue caused a local driver to black out resulting in a one-car accident north of Memphis Saturday morning.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Gary D. Shoop, 45, was northbound on Highway 15, five miles north of Memphis, in a 1998 Jeep Cherokee when he lost consciousness. The vehicle traveled off the west side of the roadway and went down a steep embankment before overturning and coming to rest on its top.
Shoop sustained serious injuries in the accident. He was transported by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Hospital. He was later taken by AirEvac helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.
The crash occurred at 10:30 a.m. on October 23rd.
The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriff's Department, ambulance service, first responders, Memphis Police Department and Scotland County Fire and Rescue.
