Blessing Cardiology Services Celebrates One Year Anniversary at SCH
Recently, Blessing Physician Services and Scotland County Hospital completed the first year of providing cardiology services in northeast Missouri. BPS cardiologists John Hammock, MD; Rafe Heng, DO; and Steven Krause, DO, established a specialty practice at Memphis Medical Services located within Scotland County Hospital just over a year ago. Since January, Dr. Hammock and Laura Merlo, LPN, travel to Memphis every Thursday to see patients at Memphis Medical Services. In addition, they provide diagnostic interpretation for cardiac tests and procedures performed at SCH.
"We feel so fortunate that Blessing Physician Services provides a steady and consistent cardiology clinic each week," said Marcia Dial, CEO, Scotland County Hospital. "Over 400 patient visits to the clinic have occurred in the first year and we know that has allowed many patients to receive cardiology care close to home, right here in Memphis."
Scotland County Hospital provides many cardiology and cardiopulmonary diagnostic tests, including EKG, EEG, Holter Monitoring, Stress Testing and Respiratory Therapies. Plus, the hospital offers cardiology rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) services in the newly certified cardiac rehab center. Primarily, physicians refer patients for cardiac rehab that have experienced a heart attack, coronary artery stent, coronary artery by-pass grafting, valve replacement, or new onset stable angina or heart transplant. During cardiac rehab at SCH, the caring staff formulates a rehab program for a patient that focuses on preventing a second episode, which includes changes in lifestyle behaviors thus reducing of risk factors for disease progression and necessary information for softening the impact of cardiovascular disease on quality of life.
"Using all the resources at SCH, we provide as much care as possible in Memphis. When patients require more advanced care or treatment, we can easily transfer them to Blessing Hospital and continue their care in Quincy," Dr. Hammock said. "We have also been able to partner with the Blessing Hospital Heart and Vascular Center to conduct cardiac screenings for area athletes, which is an added benefit."
Blessing Physician Services, established in 2005 as part of the Blessing Health System, is a multi-specialty practice group consisting of over 40 physicians who serve residents of western Illinois, northeast Missouri and southeast Iowa. Blessing Physician Services operates medical offices in Quincy as well as rural clinics in Warsaw, IL and Palmyra, MO; and specialty clinics in Carthage, Pittsfield and Warsaw, IL and Memphis.
