Hospital Hosts Special Groundbreaking Ceremony For $10 Million Expansion

In a ground breaking ceremony on September 30, 2010, Anita J. (Janie) Dunning, State Director, USDA Rural Development, presented the Scotland County Hospital with a gold shovel to commemorate the occasion on the expansion and renovation of the hospital. Dunning expressed her appreciation of the hospitalís efforts to stimulate the economy by utilizing $10,000,000 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through USDA Rural Development Community Facility Program.

ďIím pleased to hear that with the help of competitive funds from the USDA, the Scotland Memorial Hospital will be able to provide enhanced resources to the Memphis community,Ē U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill said. ďThe expansion of Scotland Memorial Hospital will further ensure that the critical health and well-being needs of Northeastern Missourians are properly served.Ē

The USDA Rural Development funds will finance the construction of new building additions totaling approximately 18,900 square feet, along with renovating 13,500 square feet of the Hospitalís current facilities. In addition a new 7,300 square feet clinic addition with approximately 3,000 square feet of finished space for a library and conference/educational area will be constructed. The project will allow additional space and layout within the departments, as well as improving the flow from department to department.

Scotland County Memorial Hospital District was organized in 1966 and began operations in 1970. Through the years, several additions and improvements to the hospital have been completed. The District is designated as a critical access hospital and offers comprehensive health care services to residents in a four county area of Scotland, Schuyler, Knox, and Clark counties, as well as other adjoining areas in Missouri and Iowa. Scotland County Hospitalís mission is ďto improve the healthcare of our communities with services close to home.Ē The hospitalís Board of Directors, Administration, Medical Staff and employees are committed to improving the health of the communities they serve. The hospital earns revenues from services provided to patients and is partially supported by appropriations from Scotland County.

ďThe Hospital is looking forward to the completion of the new expansion. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to work with USDA Rural Development on this important project. With the improvements & expansion, the Hospital will be equipped to provide services for decades to come. We want the area residents to come out and check out the hospital as it grows and be a part of that. Itís more fun to show people what we are doing as opposed to telling them,Ē said Scotland County Hospital CEO, Marcia Dial.

ďThis is a great partnership effort when everyone works together for a common goal of meeting the essential needs of a community,Ē said Dunning. ďThis project mirrors USDA Rural Developmentís mission and President Obamaís initiative of being committed to the future of rural communities. I want to personally thank everyone that has worked together to make this project a reality. I am pleased that so many rural residents will benefit from an updated health care facility.Ē

Dunning added, ďAppreciation is also extended to our federal elected officials for supporting the USDA Rural Development programs. They have been strong proponents for the necessary funding for essential services for rural Missourians.Ē
