Stolen Ring Recovered after Being Ingested by Suspect

Four felony charges are a hard pill to swallow, but that wasnít the only thing a Memphis woman was faced with consuming following her arrest on September 7th.

According to the Memphis Police Department, a suspect in a robbery case ingested a 1 1/2 carat diamond ring in an attempt to hide the evidence of her alleged crimes.

Kimberly L. Newcomer, 46, of Memphis, was taken into custody last Tuesday on felony stealing charges. She was arrested by the Memphis Police Department outside of a home at 715 N. Main Street, where she was performing mowing services after allegedly entering the house and stealing a large sum of cash.

Officers had been monitoring the residence after the owner reported the theft of a diamond ring as well as a debit card that reportedly had been illegally used to steal $500 or more from the property ownerís bank account on at least two occasions.

The police report indicated that after Newcomer was taken into custody, she apparently swallowed the diamond ring, valued at an estimated $10,000. She later confessed the attempt to hide the ring to investigators, who transported her to the hospital where an X-ray verified the ringís location. The ring was later recovered while Newcomer was being housed at the Clark County Detention Center in Kahoka.

Newcomer has been charged with two counts of class C felony stealing and two counts of class D felony fraudulent use of a credit/debit device. She is being held on a $50,000 cash only bond.

She is scheduled to appear before Judge Karl DeMarce in the Associate Circuit Court on September 21st at 9:00 a.m.

The arrest followed a nearly three-month long investigation by the Memphis Police Department, which was assisted by the Scotland County Sheriffís Department, the Clark County Sheriffís Department and the North Missouri Drug Task Force.

The crimes allegedly occurred between May 22 and September 7 of this year.

Newcomer has been charged as a persistent offender, as she has previously pleaded guilty to two or more unrelated felonies. She pled guilty in 2005 to the class D felony of unlawfully receiving food stamps in a Schuyler County case followed by a guilty plea in 2006 in an Adair County case on a class D felony charge of fraudulently attempting to obtain controlled substances.
