Recent Bust Resolves Two Dozen Area Burglaries

A joint effort by Iowa and Missouri law enforcement agencies has resulted in the arrest of five individuals believed to have been responsible for more than two dozen burglaries across the region, including no fewer than nine break-ins at area churches.

The Davis County Sheriffs Department indicated the crime spree dates back to early May when a joint investigation began with the Bloomfield Police Department.

Recently the rash of thefts spread into Ottumwa, IA, and Wapello County as well as into northeast Missouri where crimes were reported in Clark, Knox and Schuyler counties.

The first arrest in the case was made on August 12 when 20-year-old Christopher J. Scott or rural Bloomfield was taken into custody.

David Patrick Scott, Jr., 24, of Lancaster was arrested on August 26.

Both men were charged with multiple counts of third degree burglary, a class D felony, as well as several counts of misdemeanor theft.

On August 30, officers arrested Jamie N. Scott, 25, of Lancaster.

Two days later in Scotland County, local law enforcement officers took two individuals into custody. Eighteen-year-old Ashley N. Hudson of Memphis was arrested by the Scotland County Sheriffs Department. The Memphis Police Department apprehended 25-year-old William D. Edwards of Memphis.

All three individuals have been charged with one count of burglary in the third degree and misdemeanor theft.

Our office has received confession on as many as 24 more burglaries that have taken place in churches, homes and business properties from Ottumwa, IA, to Kirksville, MO, said Davis County Sheriff Dave Davis.

The investigation recovered several stolen items. Officers indicated the thefts had focused on computers, cameras and other electronics.

The Davis County Sheriffs Department was assisted in the investigation by the Bloomfield and Ottumwa, IA, police departments, the Wapello County Sheriffs Department as well as the Scotland, Clark, Knox and Schuyler county sheriffs departments and the Memphis, Lancaster, Edina and Kirksville police departments.
