Public Support Revives Ridge Street Project

People pulling together to make improvements. Thats what finally may make it possible to complete a road project on the east side of town that has been under discussion for several years.

Several years ago the Memphis City Council had agreed to lower a section of Ridge Street, where a significant rise in the road caused by the former railroad path was creating a blind spot for motorists entering and exiting driveways directly north of the road crest.

But the project became bogged down in the legal process as the city had difficulty securing permission to perform grade work on the adjoining property right-of-ways.

Now it appears all of the adjoining landowners are on board for the project, and have even pledged to donate dirtwork and materials to help offset some of the cost of making the road improvement.

Street Superintendent Roy Monroe indicated one property owner had pledged to do the dirtwork with his equipment if the city would provide the fuel. Alderman Lucas Remley added that another landowner had offered to provide gravel for the project.

Monroe stated plans called for lowering the street approximately three-feet at the crest, eliminating the sight issue for motorists.

He estimated costs for resurfacing the section of the street at approximately $5,000, as the project likely would entail roughly 120-feet of street.

The council agreed that according to official minutes, the issue had been voted on and approved by a previous council and it should proceed if all parties involved will agree to provide a temporary construction right-of-way for the project.

Monroe was instructed to pursue signatures for the easement from the three property owners that control the access to the site, and once completed, to finalize the construction plans to make the safety improvement a reality.
