Softball Field Project Moving Forward With Private Funding
A proposed improvement at the Scotland County R-I east ball field is moving forward thanks to a generous donation from the private sector.
The Scotland County R-I Booster Club voted to fund approximately $16,000 of the estimated $44,000 cost to construct a new 24x44 concession stand with restrooms to serve the ball diamond that is used as the primary high school softball field.
Neill McKee made a matching donation of $16,000 to fund the project, while also pledging to secure financing for the remaining cost with hopes that additional private funding would come forward for the project.
The field is utilized by the SCR-I sports teams as well as the Little League system.
SCR-I Superintendent Dave Shalley stated the project has been under consideration for some time, but with a bleak picture for education funding in the state over the next few years, the district had been hesitant to expend funds on the improvement.
The point proved moot, as the booster club and McKee joined forces to insure the district would not have to spend a cent on the project.
Preliminary plans call for the construction of the new facility to begin as soon as possible, with the start of the high school softball season less than a month away.
Water lines from the school to the site were put in place last year when MasTec crews were boring new fiber optic lines in town for the phone company.
The current concession stand at the site does not have running water, and the field is currently served only by a portable restroom.
Shalley indicated the new restrooms will expand the district’s ability to host championship events. They will also be utilized during school hours for children on the playgrounds during recess.
