Local Donors Supporting Police Child Safety Program

Law enforcement is charged with catching the bad guys when necessary, but the police also work diligently to prevent crime and accidents before they happen.

The Memphis Police Department will again be receiving some invaluable tools to help educate local students about child safety thanks to the generous contributions of area businesses to the National Child Safety Council.

Several hundred dollars were donated to the program to help purchase educational materials through the NCSC ranging in topics from bicycle and bus safety to drug and crime prevention. The NCSC materials are delivered directly to the police department for distribution within the school system during regularly scheduled education visits made by officers to the student body.

This is a big asset in our efforts to reach out to the kids, not only to teach them about safety but also to let them know we are there to help them, said Chief Bill Holland.

Holland credited former police chief John Myers with initiating the program that has proven very successful over the years.

Donors are contacted by the NCSC seeking contributions. A gift of $2.50 provides educational materials for one student. Many local donors chose to give $75 to purchase enough materials for an entire classroom of 30 students.

Approximately 6,000 public safety agencies in more than 40 states use the NCSC materials to serve more than 16 million children annually, assisted by its network of over 50 safety counselors.

The NCSC was started in 1955 by H.R. Wilkinson, a Jackson, Michigan business executive, after he learned that more children die of accidental causes than of all the communicable diseases combined. He started personally visiting police agencies and schools to explore ideas for mitigating this tragedy.

After starting off with a $500 loan, the NCSC has grown to receive the support of more than 150,000 businesses nationwide.
