Voters Elect New City Marshal, School Board Representatives

A pair of contested races both at the city and county-wide level still brought just shy of 37% of the register voters in Scotland County out to the polls. Voters elected a new city marshal as well as two new members to the Scotland County R-I Board of Education.

Former board member Fred Clapp was the leading vote recipient in the SCR-I school board election. He will be joined on the board of education by Trinity Davis. Clapp earned 527 votes and Davis received 492 votes. Former board member Stacy Westhoff received 373 votes followed by incumbents Bill Cottrell (285), Stacy Alexander (281) and Samantha Brush (104).

In the city of Memphis, more than 600 ballots were cast in the city marshal race with challenger Bill Holland unseating incumbent John Myers by a final margin of 363 to 212. Jason Moss received 57 votes for the position.

The city will also have a new east ward alderman as Tom Glass narrowly outdistanced Scott Goff for the right to replace Jamie Parker, who did not seek re-election. Glass earned 153 votes to 140 for Goff.

Incumbents William Reckenberg, mayor, and Chris Feeney, west ward alderman, both ran unopposed and were re-elected.

The other city ballot issue saw voters finally pass a proposition to allow the city treasurer position to be appointed by the mayor as opposed to it being an elected post. The city contracts its tax collection services through the county, thus the city post has no job duties, nor pay, and simply was an election cost for the city.

The motion passed by a 314-290 margin.

The other countywide ballot issue featured five candidates for three seats on the governing board of the Scotland County Health Department. Sue Payne was the top vote recipient with 927 votes. She will be joined on the board by Patty Freburg (854 votes) and Dee Wiley (609 votes). Robert Parrish received 361 votes while 205 votes were cast for Jason Moss.

The Gorin R-III Board of Education saw Rhonda Peterson and Ryan Miller, Sr. elected to fill three-year terms. They received 39 and 44 votes respectively to four votes cast for Ricky Miller, Jr. Tammie Dale was elected to fill the two-year unexpired term.

Three board of trustees members were elected in Arbela. Richard Stevenson received 10 votes as did write-in candidate Mandy Bulen. Robert Dundee was also elected with eight votes. Five votes were cast for Sheila Remley, Sandra Remley and Carol Wiley. Michelle Dundee received 12 votes to be elected to the one-year unexpired term on the board.

In Granger, Tom Shannan was elected to the board of trustees with 10 votes. Richard Byrn was written in on seven ballots to win the other seat.

In the city of Gorin, Ervin Gene Berry was elected as west ward alderman with 9 votes. Leah Colbert received two votes as the east ward alderman. Four votes were written in, but with no official write-in candidates, they went uncounted. The same situation occurred in the Gorin city clerk race where Courtney Thompson was elected with three votes despite nine write-in ballots being cast.

Voters in Rutledge elected Lewis Powell (10 votes), David Herr (9 votes) and Wesley Weiler (9 votes) to serve on the board of trustees.
