Opening Day of Filing Generates at Least Two Races for County Offices

Candidates have until March 30th to file for county and state office.

Filing officially opened on February 23rd for county and state offices subject to the August primary election and the November general election, and while there are still four weeks remaining in the filing period, several races are already being defined.

A pair of candidates have filed for the Scotland County presiding commissioner post. Chipper Harris, who was appointed by Governor Jay Nixon to fill the post, has filed to seek election to the position. Harris, who is completing the term of former presiding commissioner Mike Stephenson who resigned last year, filed on the Democrat ticket.

He will have opposition from the Republican party, where long-time Scotland County Clerk Betty Lodewegen filed to seek the presiding commissioner job.

Deputy County Clerk Batina Dodge has filed for the county clerk post on the Democrat ticket.

Interim Scotland County treasurer Kathy A. Campbell will seek the post full term in November. She filed for the job on the Democrat ticket. Kathy Kiddoo filed for the post on the Republican side.

Several incumbents have already entered the race to retain their posts. Recorder of Deeds Dana Glascock, Circuit Clerk Anita Watkins, Associate Circuit Court Judge Karl DeMarce, Collector of Revenue Kathy Becraft and Prosecuting Attorney Kimberly J. Nicoli, all have filed for re-election on the Democrat ballot.

First Circuit Judge Gary Dial had to travel all the way to Jefferson City to file for re-election at the secretary of stateís office.

Tuesday was busy in that office as a number of other candidates seeking office to serve Scotland County constituents also signed up on the opening of filings on Tuesday.

Three candidates for First District State Representative completed their paperwork to file. Keri Cottrell filed on the Democrat ticket while Craig Redmon and Neill McKee will seek the nod as the Republicanís candidate for the post.

The battle for State Senate seat for District 18 will feature a pair of familiar faces as incumbent Wes Shoemyer has filed for re-election on the Democrat ticket. Current First District State Representative Brian Munzlinger will seek the job on the Republican side.

District 9 of the United States House of Representatives has two candidates filed for the post, both on the Republican side. James O. Baker of St. Peters has filed for the position as has incumbent Blaine Luetkemeyer of St. Elizabeth.

The race for the U.S. Senate Post being vacated by Kit Bond created the most traffic in the secretary of stateís office. No fewer than 14 candidates placed their names on the ballot in the opening of the filing period. Secretary of State Robin Carnahan will seek the job on the Democrat ticket along with Francis J. Vangeli of Columbia.

The Republican ballot is a bit crowded with nine potential candidates headed by U.S. Representative Roy Blunt and state senator Chuck Purgason. They are joined by James Schmidt of St. Charles, Hector Maldonado of Sullivan, Kristi Nichols of Kansas City, Deborah Solomon of Independence, R.L. Praprotnik of St. Louis, Davis Conway of St. Peters and Mike Vontz of Lake St. Louis.

The race also features Libertarian candidate Jonathan Dine of Riverside and Constitutional Party candidates Joe Martellaro of Cuba and Jerry Beck of La Monte.
