Icy Conditions Add to Make Up Dates Piling Up For SCR-I

The disappointment was obvious in the voice of Superintendent Dave Shalley early Friday morning when he announced that Scotland County R-I School would once again be closed due to the weather. It marked the third day last week that the call went out to parents via the districtís new automated call system.

The closings came just days after the Scotland County R-I Board of Education rescheduled six days of school lost to illness and weather earlier this year, the organization will have several more holes to fill thanks to Mother Nature.

Freezing rain, fog and ice on the roadways forced SCR-I and other area schools to cancel classes on January 19-20 and 22 after being in session on Monday, January 18 despite the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day holiday.

At the January 14th meeting of the SCR-I Board of Education the district announced six make-up dates for the previously missed school. January 18th was the first. The board changed the March 12 scheduled vacation date for parent-teacher conferences, to an early out day, with release at 1:05 p.m. The third make-up date will be April 1st. The School year was extended three days, May 19-21 to accommodate the remaining dates of the original six.

The board of education will have to consider additional make-up dates at the February meeting to account for the three days lost last week, and more inclement weather is looming as blizzard-like conditions hit the area on January 25th.
