Grazing Specialist to Speak in Memphis
Doug Peterson, a State Grassland Conservationist with the NRCS will be speaking at the Memphis Fire Department on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Mr. Peterson grew up on a farm near Newtown, Mo. He and his family currently run 500 head of livestock utilizing various grazing systems. By using different grazing techniques the Peterson’s have eliminated most of the purchased fertilizers and have been able to limit hay needs to one bale per cow during the winter.
The event will be hosted by Pharo Cattle Company of Colorado and Triple L Angus Farms of Arbela. “Since our farm was featured in Missouri Farmer Today, our phone has been ringing off the hook,” said Garth Lloyd of Triple L Angus Farms. “I spoke with Kit Pharo about hosting an event like this. Pharo Cattle Company has been hosting “Herd Quitter” meetings across the country and was interested.”
“This is a great opportunity for local livestock producers,” said Lloyd. “Doug Peterson has speaking engagements all over America. He is an expert grazier who knows how to be profitable. We can’t always control the market, but we can control expenses —and that may be the only way to stay in the livestock business in the future,” said Lloyd.
The cost of the meeting has been donated but seating will be limited and on a first-come-first-served basis.
